The True Ritual that Inspired the Film

Writer/Director Ekachai Uekrongtham was inspired to make The Coffin after hearing about a mass funeral for the living where thousands of people turned up at a North Eastern temple in Thailand to lie in coffins and went through the ritual.

Referred to in Thailand as "Non Loeng Sadorcro" which literally means Lie in Coffin, Rid of Bad Luck, this controversial ritual has been around for decades but in the last few years, it has become increasingly popular.

The ritual involves participants lying in coffins while a group of monks perform death rites on them as if the participants are already dead. This is then followed by a chant of new life.

Many participants had said they felt as if they were reborn after the ritual - with all their bad karma buried behind them. Some reported that they felt the ritual helped fool the spirits that they're already dead so they could start their new lives afresh like newborns. There are also others who claimed they've met spirits of their dead loved ones while lying in the coffins.
However, this "death rite for the living' is not without its detractor. Some brand it as an occult practice while many feel it's a bad omen to lie in coffins when they're still alive. Some went as far as saying that this ritual is nothing but a case of commercialism entering the sacred religious domain.

The criticisms, however, have not stopped more and more Thai people to voluntarily go through this "death ritual for the living'.
In Thailand, one may request for the ritual to be performed on him or her at a number of Buddhist temples across the country. Some temples publicize and conduct 'Non Loeng Sadorcro' regularly. Several others also organize 'mass funerals for the living' on a periodical basis.

Usually, no fee is charged but participants normally make donations towards the temples in return for having the ritual performed on them.

How did this ritual come about? It's speculated that the ritual in its current form is an evolved version of what stared out as a simple act of donating coffins to the poor and those who died without relatives

Painted skin

My friends & i went to watch the painted skin just now.
We were a bit late entering the cinema.
When we entered, the movie has begun.
NOt lasting for more than half an hour, some problems cropped up.
The system's sound was error.

No sound was displaying for about 15mins, which cause some of the audience quite irritating but also feel funny.
1st time wor, encountered this kind of incident.
Haha...
After that, the movie keep showing, i admit that it is a not bad movie.
Quite touching, very different from what i imagined before watched it.
I tot it would be quite cruel evil story etc, but it appeared not wor.
It was a touching love story instead.
When Vicky zhao (pei rong) is about to die, his husband words touched my friend & I.
I cried wor..
Wkakakka....
When i busying looking for tissue, i notice my friend is doing the same thing.
But she couldnt find it, thus i gave it to her & she laughed.
Hahaha...
Laoba couldnt believe that both of us were cried just now, he couldnt figure out why we did so --"
No feeling at all. Heartless!!

The ending is Xiao wei (Zhou xun/evil) sacrifice herself for her beloved & others for reviving their lives.
Qi yu wu also plays a not bad role in there.

Overall, the movie combines a bit funny & touching scenes.

Just watched this movie with my hOney & laoba.
Hoho...
Quite okay lar, but the animation is too computerized.

Only a moment after it began, my honey has feel annoyed with the animations.
Hahaha...
Sabo2 ar honey..
Yeah, i admit that the pictures are some kind not too nice & not realistic.
But the plot is still okay lar.

My friends and i are waiting for painted skin, hoping it will be appeared soon in the cinema.
After idul fitri is the best time because i'm gonna pulang kampuang ar!!

Painted skin ~ Movie

Painted Skin is based on the same title short story from Liao Zhai Zhi Yi.
The story is set in late Yuen Dynasty, at the time when demons and devils roam free.
A fairy Shui Mei Ling who killed by her lover 100 years ago turned into a demon, and constantly needs the heart and skin of man to maintain her beauty.
As her time for reincarnation draws near, her last victim Wang Er Sheng turns out to be a descendant of the lover she killed, while his brother Wang Er Lang (Donnie Yen) is a ghostbusting master who is highly skilled, brave and smart.

Vicky Zhao
Kind-hearted and virtuous, deeply loves her husband Chen Kun. Yet she is more than meets the eye.

Zhou Xun
Fox spirit with multiple disguises. Sometimes appears as an innocent little girl, sometimes behave like a little demoness. Upon falling for Chen Kun, is willing to do anything for him. Has a selfish and parochial view on love initially but eventually learns the meaning of true love.

Sun Li
Dresses like a guy, and Sun Li wasn't very happy about it at first. But considering that her makeup time was the shortest, it offset her gripes. The three women are always jumping down one another's throat in the film, though in actual life, they live harmoniously with one another.

A pugilistic ghostbuster who is very stouthearted and righteous, yet somewhat silly, and no one believes in her though she has the ability to tell demons apart from humans. Would willingly sacrifice herself for love.

Chen Kun
A brave and handsome general. He's not exactly irresponsible, yet has feelings for both his wife Vicky Zhao and fox spirit Zhou Xun. Is helplessly bewitched by the latter, apparently not because he lacks conviction, but she's too cunning.

Donnie Yen
A roaming pugilistic who knows nothing about the occult. Carries a torch for Vicky Zhao but unable to express to her. Feels sorry for Vicky Zhao's plight owing to Chen Kun's infidelity.

Reportedly, Donnie Yen has more drama scenes, including romance, than action scenes in this movie, and has the least fights in Painted Skin compared to his other movies.

Qi Yi Wu
This Flying Reptile is the fox spirit's guardian. Loves her deeply and would do whatever it takes to win her heart. Extremely possessive. Kills indiscriminately in order to obtain human hearts to sustain her life. Yet his effort goes unappreciated and he couldn't accept it.
While fighting a war in the desert, Chen Kun, a general of Central Plains, saves a beauty Zhou Xun and brings her home. He doesn't know her true identity - a thousand year fox spirit. In Chen Kun's house, Zhou Xun meets his wife Vicky Zhao.

In order to have Chen Kun to herself, not only does she mask her needs for a human heart daily to sustain her beauty, but also frames Vicky Zhao, accusing her of being a demon, forcing a pill down her throat, turning her pale white.

Vicky Zhao couldn't clear her name, and gradually loses Chen Kun's affection, and could only stand by watching Zhou Xun and Chen Kun whispering sweet nothings in each other's ears.

Sun Li, who possesses the special ability of third eye is able to tell Zhou Xun's true nature, but no one buys her story. In the process of rescuing Vicky Zhao, she runs into martial arts exponent Donnie Yen. The two join forces against the demons.
